There are really only two things you want from tab management: close everything that is open, and reopen everything you need later. In LB TAB Layers, ■ on a group closes all of its tabs and ▶ reopens them — and because every tab is kept as a Chrome bookmark, closing loses nothing.
1. Close tabs in bulk
In plain Chrome you close tabs one by one, use “Close other tabs”, or close the whole window. Either way the tabs are gone, and “Recently closed” only remembers so much.
In LB TAB Layers you press ■ on a group once. Every tab in that group closes — but they all stay saved as bookmarks. Only the tabs (and the memory they used) are gone; your data is still in Chrome’s bookmarks.
| Plain Chrome | LB TAB Layers | |
|---|---|---|
| How | One by one, or the whole window | One click per group |
| Your tabs afterwards | Gone (restoring is hit and miss) | Kept as bookmarks |
| Memory | Freed | Freed |
| Getting them back | “Recently closed”, with limits | One click, any time |
2. Open tabs in bulk
Chrome can open every bookmark in a folder, but you have to keep those folders organized yourself, and the new tabs simply pile on top of the ones already open.
In LB TAB Layers you press ▶ on a group, and every saved tab in it opens at once.
Put the two together: switch workspaces
- Morning: press ▶ on your “Work” group. Mail, project tools and documents all open at once.
- Midday: press ■ on “Work” (the tabs close but stay saved) and ▶ on “Research”.
- Afternoon: ■ on “Research”, ▶ on “Work” — you are back exactly where you left off.
- Evening: close the work tabs and open your “Personal” group.
Like a save file in a game: store your whole working state, then load it again whenever you need it.
Why this is different from other tools
Other tools can close tabs in bulk too — OneTab is the best-known. But it keeps saved tabs in its own storage, separate from Chrome’s bookmarks. LB TAB Layers saves them as ordinary Chrome bookmarks, so they stay if you uninstall the extension and sync to your other computers through your Google account.
Get started in 30 seconds
- Install LB TAB Layers from the Chrome Web Store.
- Create groups such as “Work”, “Personal” and “Read later” with the New Group button.
- Drag your open tabs from Solo Tabs into the groups. They are saved as bookmarks automatically.
- Press ■ to close a group and free up memory, and ▶ to bring it back.
Frequently asked questions
Q. If I close a group with ■, are its tabs lost?
No. The tabs close, but every one of them stays saved as a Chrome bookmark. Press ▶ on the group to reopen them all.
Q. How is this different from OneTab?
OneTab keeps saved tabs in its own storage. LB TAB Layers saves them as ordinary Chrome bookmarks, so they remain if you remove the extension and sync through your Google account.
